About three months after being forced to resign as Chandler city manager, Mark Pentz will return to work — with a boost in pay and a stronger safety net to boot.
The City Council voted 5-2 Thursday to rehire Pentz, who was the city manager for 2 1 /2 years before his ouster April 11.
He will return to work July 17 with a new contract that allows him to keep a 4 percent pay increase granted in the separation agreement.
The contract also entitles Pentz to nine months of salary and benefits if he is fired or forced to resign.
“I don’t think we could get anyone of his quality in here with less than 12 months,” said Councilman Bob Caccamo.
The move essentially reverses what many considered the last controversial decision made by a lame-duck council.
