Library expansion for an early childhood learning center at Chandler Public Library’s Sunset branch will be the recipient of the Friends of Chandler Library’s 2011 fundraising campaign. The Friends of Chandler Library will kick off the campaign with a public reception, featuring Chandler artist-photographer Sue Cullumber, on Tuesday Sept. 13 at 5:30 p.m. in the Copper Room, located on second floor of the downtown Chandler branch.
The Early Childhood Learning Center at the Sunset branch will provide parents and preschoolers with additional space for interactive educational modules that will increase their children's pre-literacy skills and enhance their school readiness. The Friends’ goal of $3000 will support the expansion project.
Cullumber has donated a photograph from her Southwest Collection as the grand prize for the Friends’ raffle. “Desert Color,” the matted and framed photograph, depicts the Sonora desert, vivid colors of barrel cacti and succulents against a backdrop of a neutral desert and a stormy monsoon sky. Raffle tickets, $3 each or 3 for $5, will be available for sale at the kick-off reception, at the Friends’ Half Off Used Book Sale Sept. 16-18 and in Pages, the café and gift shop located in the Chandler Public Library, located at 22 S. Delaware in downtown Chandler.
Cullumber, known for her fine arts photography with compelling wildlife and landscape themes, has always had an interest in photography. A native of Chicago, she arrived in the Valley in 1978 as a student at Arizona State University. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and a master’s degree in education, Cullumber began her teaching career in special education in 1990. She currently teaches science and Spanish in Scottsdale.
Her interest in photography progressed after receiving her first digital camera several years ago. She has studied many different photographic styles and techniques including black & white, digital and landscapes, as well as different lighting techniques. Cullumber often combines her love of photography with her passion for nature and conservation, which is reflected in her work.
She has been honored for her photos in many photography contests including Kodak Picture of the Day, World Wildlife Fund, Photoshowdown.com and Betterphoto.com. Cullumber was one of four artists selected to exhibit in Chandler’s Downtown Photowrap Project. Her photos have appeared in National Geographic, Earthwatch, Parade Magazine, Galapogos Conservancy and The Arizona Republic. Her works also have been on exhibit in Chandler’s Vision Gallery.
