Chandler police are searching for a convicted sex offender accused in the sexual assault of a 16-year-old fast-food worker in the restaurant’s restroom.

According to police, the girl was working at Carl’s Jr., 1972 N. Alma School Road, when a man in his 30s used an undisclosed weapon to force her into the men’s room at 8 p.m. March 8.

After the assault, the girl told her boss who called Chandler police, said Sgt. George Arias.

"It was a very brazen attack in a public restaurant that was open for business," Arias said.

The girl identified Mark Andrew Murray, a 38-yearold wanted sex offender, as her assailant through a photo lineup, Arias said.

"We had leads as to where he was, but once those leads didn’t pan out, we decided to go public and ask for the public’s help," Arias said.

According to Maricopa County Superior Court records, Murray was convicted in Yuma County Superior Court of forcing a 21-year-old woman at knifepoint to perform a sex act in front of her 3-year-old child. Arizona Department of Corrections records indicate Murray was sentenced to prison in March 1992 and was released in June 1994.

Maricopa County Judge Michael Wilkinson placed Murray on four years of probation on July 28 for failing to register as a sex offender. The judge placed Murray in a work furlough program in Tucson, allowing him to serve six months in the Pima County Jail at night.

At some point, Murray moved to Maricopa County and a warrant was issued for his arrest on Nov. 8 when he failed to return to jail.

Chandler police detective George Arias said a second warrant was issued for Murray for failing to register as a sex offender.

Prison records show Murray also served time on criminal damage, drug, aggravated assault and burglary charges.

The restaurant manager declined comment Friday.

Murray is white, 5 feet 10 inches with short brown hair, a balding spot and hazel eyes. He has a medium build, a goatee and a scar on his forehead.

Murray should be considered armed and dangerous, Arias said.

Anyone with information on Murray’s whereabouts should call 911, or the Chandler Police Department at (480) 782-4130.
