The Gila River Indian Community may be looking for a new site for a proposed casino and resort project currently planned near Gilbert Road and Hunt Highway.

The community’s planning and zoning commission has already recommended against the site after a lengthy public hearing in May, where dozens of Gila River residents voiced opposition to the site.

The casino plan now goes to the community’s council for a final vote on a needed zoning change. The council’s next scheduled meeting is Wednesday, though community spokeswoman Alia Maisonet could not confirm Friday that the zoning issue would be on next week’s agenda.
