A Gilbert man drowned in his pool while trying to retrieve a neighbor’s basketball Thursday night, authorities said.

The identity of the 40-yearold was not immediately released, pending notification of his next of kin.

Gilbert fire spokesman Capt. Jamie Spada said that around 7:20 p.m., a boy’s basketball went into the backyard pool of his neighbor’s house in the 1400 block of East Oxford Lane. The boy, 12, asked his neighbor to get the ball.

But for an unknown reason, the man fell in and sank to the bottom.

The boy’s mother called 911 while the boy’s father pulled the man out of the pool and attempted CPR.

The man was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn hospital, where he was

pronounced dead around 9 p.m., Spada said.
