A retired U.S. Foreign Service employee who traveled to 92 countries, Allan J. Freidbauer is now a Scottsdale resident and an ambassador for downtown.

Freidbauer volunteers as a downtown ambassador for the Downtown Group. Not only does he help visitors find their way to the tourist shops, but he also volunteers as a “navigator,” giving information to travelers at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

As if that were not enough in helping out, the avid bike rider spends more time volunteering at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Friedbauer, however, doesn’t make volunteering his full-time job.

“I didn’t retire to work full time,” he says. “I’ve got to have a little free time.”

He is taking a weekly Scottsdale government class for eight weeks. He also rides his bike on the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt, plays tennis and pushes his wife to volunteer as well.

“I like to get involved, I like to volunteer,” Friedbauer says.

In the summer, he and his wife go to their cabin at Hart Lake in northern Minnesota to fish and be in the outdoors.
