The Apache Junction Police Department is investigating allegations that the Republican candidate for Pinal County sheriff was seen stealing hubcaps for his 1989 Cadillac.
Witnesses reported seeing Charles Crawford, 61, pull up next to another 1989 Cadillac on Sept. 7 at a Queen Valley polling place, said Apache Junction Sgt. Dick Virgil.
The witnesses said Crawford then got out of the car and was seen "with what may have been a screwdriver in one hand and the circular disc in the other," Virgil said.
At least one hubcap was also seen flying through the air, he said.
The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office took the initial reports, but, recognizing a possible conflict of interest, Sheriff Roger Vanderpool asked Apache Junction police to take over the investigation, Virgil said. Several people have been interviewed so far, Virgil said. Eventually, a case may be submitted to the Pinal County Attorney’s Office for possible charges. Messages for Crawford were not returned Tuesday.
