Mesa police Cmdr. David Ashe, who was placed on paid suspension July 13, is suspected of “unsatisfactory” conduct while supervising the coordination of a nonprofit police and fire athletic competition, according to a complaint released Tuesday.

The complaint contained no other details on what specifically Ashe is suspected of doing, only that it involved his role in supervising the Mesa Police and Fire Games, run through the Mesa Police/ Fire Athletic Association.

Mesa Police Chief George Gascón would not say why Ashe is on suspension, but did say that his department has enlisted an outside law firm to investigate the case.

“We want to ensure that the investigation in this matter is completely above board and unbiased,” Gascón said, “and that there is no perception that there is any biases to the investigation.”

Ashe, a 30-year veteran of the force and a commander since 2001, must stay at his home from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays as part of his paid suspension, the complaint shows. He was also forced to turn over all police badges and identification cards, building and property keys and department-issued firearms and ammunition, typical procedure in accordance with department policy.

Ashe, who is in charge of the emergency services division, also is not permitted to wear his uniform. Any exceptions to the conditions must be approved by the police chief.

The annual Police and Fire Games take place throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. Participants compete in a variety of events including basketball, cross country, ice hockey, shooting and more.
