Drivers won’t face any freeway restrictions or closures over the Memorial Day weekend as the Arizona Department of Transportation is forgoing construction to make travel easier. ADOT is appealing to drivers to keep safety in mind this weekend, noting nine people were killed in fatal crashes during the previous Memorial Day holiday.
ADOT advises drivers to check tires, fluids, belts and hoses before trips, and pull completely off the roadway if they need to change a tire. The agency also says to bring food and water, a fully charged cell phone and to get plenty of rest before taking a long trip.
Drivers will find three existing work zones where drivers will need to be alert for lane shifts and reduced speed limits. Two interchange projects have work zones on Interstate 17, at Cordes Junction and at Munds Park. Also, state Route 96 north of Wikieup has a work zone.
