Rick Flowers has been named publisher of the East Valley Tribune effective May 1.
Flowers’ appointment comes at an important time in the Tribune’s growth and allows owner Randy Miller the opportunity to spend more time at the company’s other local properties: the Daily News-Sun in Sun City, Glendale/Peoria Today, Surprise Today, Ahwatukee Foothills News, Tucson Explorer, Clipper Marketplace and the Arizona Interactive Media Group.
Since Miller and his partners purchased the Tribune in March of 2010, the newspaper has increased its Sunday circulation from 100,000 to 150,000, added home delivery into Tempe, expanded its office locations and redesigned both the newspaper and website.
“In our first year of operation we have realized tremendous growth thanks in large part to Rick’s leadership,” said Miller, who has served as the Tribune’s president and publisher since the sale last year. “In addition to leading our advertising and marketing efforts, Rick has been extremely active in the community to help us define the Tribune brand and build on our strong position in the East Valley. Rick’s depth of experience across multiple media platforms provides the Tribune with solid leadership as we continue to raise the bar for our readers and advertisers.”
Flowers, 48, is a Mesa resident and native Arizonan who has over 23 years experience in the newspaper and media industry. He first started at the Tribune in 1990 and has experience with several other media companies including Gannett, Cox, Central and Freedom in both traditional and digital media environments.
Most recently, Flowers was responsible for leading the advertising and marketing efforts for the East Valley Tribune and eastvalleytribune.com since the ownership change.
“The Tribune has been an integral part of the East Valley media landscape for over 100 years and while we are proud of our rich history we also realize that success in the future has little to do with looking backward,” Flowers said. “We remain acutely focused on providing the most relevant content for our readers and the best possible solutions for our advertisers across multiple media platforms. This first year has been incredibly exciting but we’ve only scratched the surface.
“I am fortunate to work with exceptional people who are committed to building on our successes and driving future expansion. In order for us to continue to grow, we must be fully engaged in the communities we serve. I am excited about continuing to work with the many great organizations and communities in the East Valley to demonstrate our commitment.”
Flowers’ new position coincides with the promotion of Mike Miller as publisher of the Ahwatukee Foothills News. The move provides a full-time publisher for the paper and allows Jason Joseph, who had been serving as publisher for both AFN and the Sun City/Glendale/Peoria/Surprise papers, to continue full time as publisher of the West Valley Publications.
