Funnel clouds over Maricopa as part of a winter storm system sent Maricopa Unified School District schools into lockdown for a short time on Dec. 11.

MUSD Public Relations Director Tom Beckett said communications with the National Weather Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association indicated multiple cold air funnel clouds had formed in a thunderstorm moving over the city. The funnel clouds did not touch down, however, and the lockdown was lifted less than 20 minutes after it began.

During the lockdown, students and teachers moved away from windows and stayed close to interior spaces and walls.
