Gilbert Mayor Steve Berman is looking to sell at least one of his two cellular phone retail stores.

And the second could possibly be included in the deal.

"If you make the right offer you got yourself a store," said Berman, who first joined the cellular phone industry in 1984 and opened his stores in 1993.

Berman is the owner of Cellular Solutions with stores at Alma School and Baseline roads in Mesa and Gilbert and Baseline roads in Gilbert.

The Mesa store has been listed for about a month, while the Gilbert store is not listed, but could be included in an offer for both stores, he said.

The mayor emphasized that he does not plan to close either store without a deal, and that he’s already turned down some offers.

"The stores are making money but not as much as I’d like them to make," Berman said.

The mayor said selling at least one store will free up time for his duties as mayor and allow him more time to devote to his commercial and industrial real estate group, Tawa Realty and Investments.

Berman, who holds a real estate license, is one of three partners in the group which owns land near Williams Gateway Airport, Buckeye Airport, and near Loop 101 in Scottsdale.

Berman said there’s also the occasional hassle of being a mayor and owning a retail store.

In June, a Gilbert man carrying a gun walked into Berman’s Gilbert store demanding to speak to the mayor. Berman was not present at the time and the man was arrested before the mayor arrived.

Berman was elected to a four-year term as mayor in 2001.

He previously served on the council from 1987-92, including a stint as mayor from 1989-91. As mayor, he earns $26,400 per year.
