With the closing of two junior high schools as neighborhood campuses for next school year, the Mesa Unified School District will hold hearings to create new junior high attendance boundaries.

The first hearing will be 6 p.m. Thursday at Brimhall Junior High School, 4949 E. Southern Ave., Mesa. The second will be 6 p.m. Tuesday at Mesa Junior High School, 828 E. Broadway Road. Both public events will be in the schools' auditoriums.

The Planning and Boundary Design Advisory Committee is putting together recommendations to present to the district's governing board on Dec. 13.

The board decided earlier this fall to close Brimhall and Mesa Junior as neighborhood schools due to declining enrollment. Brimhall will become home to nearly 1,100 students now studying at Franklin South, Franklin Northeast and Franklin Junior High. Franklin schools offer a back-to-basics format popular with parents.

Most of Mesa Junior's buildings will be demolished. District leaders said the city is interested in possibly creating a sports recreation venue on the site.

Feedback on the junior high boundaries may be provided to the board through an online form or by sending an e-mail to boundaries@mpsaz.org.
