A Stanfield resident was kidnapped in Stanfield on New Year’s Day, enduring a beating from several men for 24 hours before escaping, a Pinal County Sheriff’s Office report stated.

The Pinal County Criminal Investigation’s Bureau took charge of the case and made an arrest Jan. 3 of Jose Angel Hernandez Ramos, 27, on charges of assault and kidnapping. Ramos was booked into the Pinal County Jail in Florence and is awaiting prosecution.

The victim told police he was walking to a convenience store along Meadowview Lane in Stanfield just after 8 p.m. on New Year’s Day to buy milk for his child. A gray van suddenly pulled up alongside the victim and four Hispanic males jumped out, asking the victim for $50, which the victim did not have, the report stated.

The four males punched the victim repeatedly, dragging him into a van, blindfolding and tying him up and taking him to a house, where his beating continued, the report stated.

After nearly a day of beatings and having his life threatened several times, the victim was able to loosen his bonds and escape attackers, spending the night of Jan. 2 in the desert hiding, before making it to the Burnt Bun Cafe the morning of Jan. 3 to call police.

PCSO detectives later determined the victim had been held at a home in the 400 block of North Cherry Lane in Stanfield, where Ramos was later arrested.
