Scottsdale will showcase its police and firefighting personnel and equipment at its 27th annual Public Safety Day event Oct. 2 at Chaparral Park.

Mark Ruffennach, a crime prevention officer for District 2 of the Scottsdale police, said the goal of the event is to educate the public about advances being made by emergency response services.

"In this day and age, law enforcement is still being enhanced, and we want to let the public know that," he said.

All public safety entities, including police, fire and SWAT units, will put their equipment and personnel on display and make themselves available to answer questions at the event.

"We like to have the public interact with us where it’s not a crisis, just talk to us about what we do," said Rural/Metro Fire Department public education officer Sandy Nygaard.

Ruffennach estimated that between 3,000 and 5,000 people will attend this year’s event.

Even though Scottsdale’s firefighting services contract with Rural/Metro is being terminated, the event will continue in future years with a new municipal fire department, he said.

"We have such a strong tie to the fire department, I don’t see that this will ever stop," Ruffennach said.
