While heavy machinery pushes construction debris from inside of the former Robinsons-May at Scottsdale Fashion Square, other large machinery prepares it to haul it away.
The parking structure along Scottsdale Road is being removed along with the store to make way for underground parking and a Barneys New York.
The shopping center is razing the old store — which began as Goldwater’s in 1961, and became Robinsons in 1989 — to make way for Barneys due to arrive in 2009, along with a whole wing of new shops. Construction is blocking the Scottsdale Road entrance to the mall.
So if that is your favorite way in, you’ll have to enter from Camelback Road or Highland Avenue in the future. The construction will eliminate about 500 parking spaces, but mall general manager Steve Helms isn’t worried.
“We’re fine on parking. Even on the day after Thanksgiving we had empty parking spaces on the top level,” Helms said. Inside the mall, you won’t even know the demolition is going on, he said.
