A 10-year-old boy suffered a head injury Wednesday afternoon after being struck by truck while chasing a ball onto Arizona Avenue, Chandler police and fire officials said.
The boy, who was responsive, was flown to Maricopa Medical Center as a precaution, Chandler Fire spokesman Paul Nies said.
An off-duty Chandler firefighter responded to the scene and gave aid to the boy prior to a fire engine arriving.
“He had help pretty quickly after this happened. He was responding appropriately,” Nies said. The off-duty firefighter kept the boy from moving his head and spine, Nies said.
“That’s the most important thing. He kept this young boy’s spine in alignment. That’s a huge concern when you get hit by a car,” Nies said.
No further information about the boy’s condition was known early Wednesday evening.
According to police, a group of boys was playing with a red rubber playground-type ball near apartments at 99 W. Palomino St. when the incident happened.
Southbound Arizona Avenue is closed at Palomino. Police are asking drivers to avoid the area.
