Kema Granillo is resigning from her position as Pinal County justice of the peace in the first precinct.
A replacement will be appointed by the county Board of Supervisors. State law outlines that registered Democrats are the only residents eligible to fill the vacancy, since Granillo is a Democrat. Applications for the position must be submitted by 5 p.m. April 25.
Justices of the peace handle low-level civil disputes, criminal misdemeanors and petty offenses and sign search warrants. Granillo worked as the chief clerk for the Florence Justice Court for nine years before she was elected to the position of justice of the peace in 1997.
Frank Ashford, a Republican, has filed papers with the county’s elections department to seek the office in the fall elections.
