A woman 9-months pregnant led police on a 19-minute car chase Friday with her 7-year-old son in the backseat, according to Gilbert police.

Melissa Baldonado, 29, and her husband, Richard Baldonado, 31, both of Chandler, were stopped at a green light at Baseline and Lindsay roads at 12:53 a.m. when a Gilbert officer saw the couple switch seats in the car and Melissa take the wheel, a police report reads.

The officer tried to make a stop for erratic driving when the car sped away hitting speeds of up to 65 mph.

Cops arrested her after the engine failed at Guadalupe and Lindsay roads and she complained her water had broken and she was in labor.

Melissa Baldonado was taken to the hospital where it was confirmed she was not in labor and her water hadn’t broken.

According to the police report, she said she fled to avoid her husband getting charged with drunken driving.

Police are recommending charges of DUI for Richard Baldonado and felony flight and endangerment for Melissa Baldonado.
