A 31-year-old Scottsdale woman died Monday morning at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn hospital of severe head injuries suffered about 24 hours earlier, police said.
Jennifer Toso, a passenger on a 1998 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Lucius Morton of Mesa, was thrown from the bike when it hit a four-door Volkswagen at 11 a.m. Sunday at 104th Street and McDowell Mountain Ranch Road, according to Scottsdale police detective Sam Bailey.
Toso, who was not wearing a helmet, died at 11 a.m. Monday, Bailey said. Morton, 34, who was wearing a helmet, was not injured. The Volkswagen driver, Carine Girardin of Scottsdale, 38, also was not hurt.
Morton and Toso were northbound on McDowell Mountain Ranch approaching 104th. Girardin was on 104th, and drove onto McDowell Mountain Ranch, Bailey said.
"The motor vehicle failed to yield the right of way after stopping at a stop sign," Bailey said. "The cycle was not able to avoid the motor vehicle and struck the left front of it."
Bailey said Morton went down with the bike and Toso was thrown off and hit her head on the pavement. She was airlifted to the hospital.
Bailey said an investigation is ongoing and citations to both drivers are pending.
