Retired Boeing employee Vernon Mathern has filed as a candidate for east Mesa’s District 5 City Council seat.

Mathern spend more than 28 years at The Boeing Company. Other past experiences include the Mesa Leadership program and the East Valley Partnership with a focus on economic development and transportation.

The 22-year Mesa resident also has served on the city’s Transportation Advisory Board, the Economic Development Advisory Board and the Mesa Arts Center Foundation Board.

District 5 now has two candidates: Mathern will run against lawyer Phil Austin for the seat vacated by Mayoral candidate Rex Griswold. Mathern and Austin both applied to be considered for the appointment to fill Griswold’s position until the March election.

The City Council approved the appointment of engineer Darrell Truitt, who so far has not indicated whether he will run for a full term on the council. The final deadline for city council and mayoral candidates is Dec. 12.
