Smoke and flames leapt from the building as people gathered at a neighboring apartment complex to watch the fire. No injuries were reported and the fire was controlled in about 24 minutes.
Two second-story units were engulfed in flames while the first-floor units were heavily damaged by smoke and water. The building was declared a total loss because the electrical panel for the building was damaged beyond repair, said Mike Dunn, Mesa Fire Department spokesman.
Two families were displaced and Red Cross was notified and was assisting in finding them shelter.
