Another elementary in the Chandler Unified School District is considering a mandatory uniform policy.
If approved later this month by the school board, Knox Elementary School would be the eighth elementary school in the district to require uniforms. If adopted, the Knox policy would begin in the 2007-08 school year.
At Wednesday’s board meeting, principal Laura Rook plans to present feedback from parents gathered by the school’s site council in the past 18 months.
The parent-based site council found that 69 percent of parents who returned surveys sent home want school uniforms, and the rest opposed the idea.
The idea of school uniforms began last school year after the site council noticed many parents who were enrolling their children asked about them, Rook said.
The school sent a survey home to parents at that time and most approved going to school uniforms, but Rook said the council didn’t push for the change for the 2006-07 school year because too few of the surveys were returned.
Voting ballots and surveys sent home this school year indicate that a majority of parents are still in favor of the switch, Rook said.
Students would be required to wear dark blue collared shirts without logos, and white, blue or tan socks and tennis shoes. Boys could wear tan pants, either long or knee-length, and girls could wear tan pants, knee-length shorts, skirts or jumpers. Students would be allowed to wear regular clothes only on student council spirit days.
Most parents have said they prefer the uniforms “because it will help decisions in the morning and disagreements about what’s appropriate for school,” Rook said.
Some parents have expressed concern to Rook that uniforms would reduce “individual expression.”
Rook said the change could reduce incidents of bullying related to clothing.
“There isn’t any one big reason to go to uniforms,” Rook said. “But I think it kind of develops that pride and school spirit ... (like) we’re on the same team.”
