The Chandler Cultural Foundation on Thursday distributed $30,000 to several community groups for festivals, concerts and other events in the city during the coming year.
The foundation received 14 applications this year requesting a total of roughly $63,000 for its Event Sponsorship Program.
Nine applicants were selected to receive a portion of the funds for their events.
The Chandler Lions Club received $5,000 for sponsorship of its Old Fashioned Fourth of July event at Tumbleweed Park and $5,000 was given to the San Marcos Symphony to aid in funding its 2003-04 concert season.
The Chandler Coalition for Civil and Human Rights was awarded $4,896 to help pay for its annual Mariachi Festival held at the Chandler Center for the Arts and the Friends of the Chandler Public Library received $4,850 to be put toward the Friends' Annual Multicultural Festival on Jan. 17.
The Downtown Chandler Community Partnership was given $5,000 for its Diamonds and Denim event held on New Year's Eve and the Asian Pacific Community in Action received $2,330 for sponsorship of its Asian Forum on Health Care Education and Outreach Strategies to be held in October.
Si Se Puede was awarded $2,500 which it will use to help fund its annual Cesar E. Chavez Recognition Dinner at the Sheraton San Marcos and the Great Arizona Puppet Theater for Puppeteers of America was awarded $5,000 for numerous Puppeteer of America Festivals held each year.
The South Chandler Self-Help Foundation received an $800 event sponsorship for its Black History Celebration on Feb. 6 and 14 in Chandler.
Each applicant was eligible to apply for up to 50 percent of its event's costs, with the total allocation not to exceed $5,000.
