A new program to use Global Positioning System devices to help track ballot boxes, voting machines and other election equipment is being rolled out by Maricopa County elections officials.

The goal is to be able to track all 17,000 pieces of voting equipment in the county to prevent it from being misplaced, and to give voters more confidence in the integrity of the election process.

Elections officials will use handheld devices to scan barcodes on the equipment and records its exact location. The program will be tested during March school-district elections and is expected to be fully implemented for the May elections.
