A 29-year-old hiker who left the trail on Camelback Mountain Sunday fell to his death, authorities said.
Police in a helicopter spotted the body of Jose Luis Avila-Puertas of Phoenix early Monday after he was reported missing about 12 hours earlier, said Phoenix police spokesman Joel Tranter.
Phoenix firefighters pronounced Puertas dead and recovered his body, said Mike Sandulak, Phoenix Fire Department Division Chief.
“It looks like he fell about 100 feet,” Sandulak said.
Tranter said Avila, who was an avid hiker, left the home he shares with his brother about 5 a.m. Sunday to hike Echo Canyon Recreation Area.
Avila’s brother found his locked truck in the parking lot at the trailhead near Tatum Boulevard and McDonald Drive and called police, who searched until sunset.
