PHOENIX - A salmonella food-poisoning outbreak that has sickened more than 1,000 people nationwide since April has infected at least 49 Arizonans, authorities said.
Federal officials are looking at raw red round, plum and Roma tomatoes; jalapeno and serrano peppers; and cilantro as possible causes of the Salmonella Saintpaul outbreak.
The illness is characterized by diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps that usually start 12 to 72 hours after eating the offending food.
So far, six Arizonans have been hospitalized and no one has died, state Department of Health Services officials said Thursday.
Victims range in age from 9 months to 78. There have been 14 cases each in Maricopa and Apache counties, nine in Navajo County, four each in Coconino and Pima counties, two in Pinal and one each in Santa Cruz and Yuma counties.
