Suns chairman Jerry Colangelo underwent successful surgery to remove prostate cancer by Dr. Peter Scardino at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York Thursday morning, the Suns announced.

Colangelo, 65, was diagnosed with prostate cancer last month and is resting comfortably after surgery. He will remain hospitalized the next few days.

Colangelo, who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in September, has been with the organization since the Suns joined the NBA in 1968.

The Suns said Colangelo and his family appreciate the recent outpouring of affection, prayers and support during this time.
