Arizona motorists who “gun it” in hopes of beating the red light could get a better chance of doing that without getting a ticket.

Current law says anyone who enters an intersection after the light has turned red can be cited. But that law defines the intersection as the line that extends from the curb on one side of the street to the opposite curb.

HB 2557, crafted by Sen. Frank Antenori, R-Tucson, redefines “intersection” to include everything starting at the crosswalk.

What that means is if the front end of the car gets into the crosswalk before the light changes, the driver can continue on without fear of a ticket even if he or she is not yet in what has traditionally been defined as an intersection.

The legislation is opposed by some police departments amid fears it will lead to more accidents as motorists decide they can make the light. The 18-12 Senate vote sends the measure to the governor as it already has been approved by the House.
