A Tempe woman has been charged with multiple felony drug and child abuse offenses in connection with leaving methamphetamine where her 7-year-old daughter was able to ingest it, nearly killing her, court records indicate.

Misty Dawn Kessler, 43, pleaded innocent and is scheduled to appear in court again Tuesday in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital called police Dec. 20 to report an examination of the girl showed traces of meth in her system.

A doctor told police the girl likely ingested "a large quantity," which had likely been in the girl’s body for three days, records say.

The girl "probably could have died, but it is very likely that she would have had kidney failure if (she) had not received treatment," the doctor also told police.

Kessler told police she did not know how her daughter ingested the drug and at first denied having any drugs in her home.

A search revealed about four grams of meth in a dresser in Kessler’s bedroom, police said.

Drug paraphernalia was also found, including a meth pipe next to a toy pipe used for blowing bubbles, records show.

Kessler told police she and her daughter were shopping on Dec. 20, and that she called 911 because her daughter was acting strange.

Kessler is facing two counts of child abuse with a dangerous crimes against children classification, one count each of possessing drugs and drug paraphernalia, and two counts of theft in connection with stolen checks and other items found at her home.
