PHOENIX (AP) — The former top deputy to Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has officially resigned from the sheriff's office while another top aide has retired.

Last week, Arpaio fired Chief Deputy David Hendershott and Deputy Chief Larry Black, both effective at 5 p.m. May 5.

The Arizona Republic reported Wednesday that Hendershott submitted his resignation in a letter delivered to county officials. He asked that the resignation become effective May 4, but Arpaio said he was making the resignation effective immediately.

Black submitted his notice of retirement Wednesday after 35 years with the Sheriff's Office, effective May 3.

The terminations arose from an administrative investigation of alleged misconduct involving Hendershott, Black and Capt. Joel Fox.

Fox remains on paid administrative leave.

Now the remaining one question is "What of all of the mess will roll up hill?"
