The Tempe Union High School District wants parents and community members to weigh in on next year’s school calendar.
The district is soliciting opinions on its Web site, which includes four proposed calendars currently on the table. Parents can view the options and e-mail their thoughts, which will be distributed to school board members.
Board members will view the four proposed calendars and community opinions in a study session open to the public on Wednesday. Staff members have already sent in their opinions on the calendars.
School board president Robin Arredondo-Savage said many staff members support sticking with this school year’s calendar. The school year begins during the first week of August, ends before Memorial Day and includes a fall break.
The only concern raised comes from school coaches, Arredondo-Savage said. “A lot of coaches feel fall break is difficult for them with team sports that still continue,” she said.
Others ask for a later start in the school year, pushing the start date to the second week of August.
The options were created by a calendar committee of parents, teachers and staff and include:
Option A: similar to current school year’s calendar
• First day of school: Aug. 6
• Fall break: Oct. 8-12
• Spring break: March 10-14
• Graduation: May 22
Option B-1: Reduced fall break
• First day of school: Aug. 15
• Fall break: Oct. 15-16
• Spring break: March 10-14
• Graduation: May 29
Option C-6: Later school year start
• First day of school: Aug. 13
• Fall break: Oct. 15-19
• Spring break: March 10-14
• Graduation: May 29
Option C-7: Later start and only one day off for fall break
• First day of school: Aug. 13
• Fall break: Oct. 12
• Spring break: March 10-14
• Graduation: May 22
