Plans are moving forward to convert Erie Elementary School in Chandler to a seventh- through 12th-grade magnet school for the 2012-13 school year. The Chandler Unified School District governing board approved the proposal by a community committee during a meeting Wednesday.
The district is looking for larger space for Hamilton Academy, a rigourous college-preparatory program that now leases rooms in a church. With declining enrollment and a mobile population, the committee suggested using Erie after looking at nearly a dozen schools in the district’s northern boundaries. There will be a meeting 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the school, 1150 W. Erie St.
Besides giving information, the district will gather input on which school or schools to move the students to prior to the transition. Erie Elementary currently has 437 students. The governing board will hear updates on the plan May 12 and May 26.
