More than a year of construction will begin Monday on about two miles of Power Road, which will be improved from the Loop 202 Santan Freeway to Pecos Road.
The work involved widening the road to three lanes in each direction and installing raised medians. Also, construction crews will rebuild the intersections at Ray and Williams Field roads.
The project will include signs and other design features to brand it as the Power Knowledge Corridor, an area where Mesa and neighboring Gilbert are developing as a high-tech hub. Both communities are working to attract higher education facilities, university research, computing, healthcare, bioscience, engineering, manufacturing and aerospace operations.
The Power Road project is estimated to cost $28.6 million and take until the fall of 2013 to complete.
The Maricopa Association of Governments will fund about 70 percent of it, or $15 million. The remaining costs will be shared equally by Mesa, Gilbert and Maricopa County.
