Two crashes a couple of miles apart Monday on westbound Interstate 10 left two dead and four injured.

One was about 2:10 p.m. between Warner and Elliot roads; the other about 3:20 p.m. south of Chandler Boulevard.

Linda Mims, 57, was killed when her vehicle rolled over; Jason Relkin, 29, of Mesa died hours later when his pickup truck slammed into a tractortrailer, Arizona Department of Public Safety officials said.

Officials did not know if the traffic from the first collision could have contributed to the second one.

“It’s hard to say because there was evening rush hour traffic and it was stop and go,” said Sgt. Harold Sanders.

“Lanes were open by the time the second collision occurred, and it’s hard to say how much people looking slows things down,” Sanders said.

Mims was taken to a hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

Also in the crash, an 8-yearold boy was taken to Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, a 50-year-old man with chest pains and a 12-year-old boy with neck injuries were taken to Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, and a 40-year-old man was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn, Chandler fire officials said. Their conditions were unknown.

The second crash occurred when a 2001 Ford Ranger driven by Relkin rear-ended a tractor-trailer in the center lane.

Relkin had no passengers in his truck, and the driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

Traffic was diverted off Interstate 10 at Loop 202 and was allowed to return to the highway at Chandler Boulevard.

The closures were in place about three hours. The freeway opened up completely about 6 p.m.
