A 72-year-old Chandler man who police say was making suicidal threats and pointing a gun at police officers was shot and killed by police outside his residence on Tuesday.
The wife of the man, identified as Edward Flener, called police shortly after 5 p.m. to report that he was making threats inside their home in the 1500 block of Vine Street and that her mother was inside.
When officers arrived, they saw Flener standing outside the home. When police confronted him, he picked up the gun from a table outside the residence and when he turned around, he pointed it at officers, said Detective Seth Tyler, a Chandler police spokesman.
Flener was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. It wasn't immediately known why Flener was making threats, but it is believed he possibly was suffering from some bouts with depression, police said.
Officer Brian Dunn, who shot Flener, was placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy, pending the outcome of the investigation, police said.
