Benedictine University has received state accreditation to open a branch campus in downtown Mesa, where it expects to begin offering classes in the fall of 2013. The Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education voted unanimously Thursday to grant Benedictine a license to offer its programs in the state.

Benedictine announced in January that it will offer classes in a city-owned building at 51 E. Main St. Its initial offerings include bachelor’s degrees in fine arts, criminal justice, communication art, psychology, theology, nutrition and business administration in management and organizational behavior. The 125-year-old private university based in Illinois expects to eventually include residential facilities and a full range of academic programs. It is one of three universities to be part of Mesa’s initiative to have multiple private colleges downtown.
