President Bush nominated Arizona native and Arizona State University law graduate Diane Humetewa to succeed Paul Charlton as U.S. Attorney for Arizona on Thursday.
Republican U.S. Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl recommended Humetewa for the position in January.
She is a member of the Hopi Tribe and has served as a senior litigator and tribal liaison for the U.S. Attorney’s Office since 2001. If confirmed by the Senate, she would become the first American Indian to serve as a U.S. attorney.
Humetewa could not be reached for comment. She previously declined interviews concerning the recommendation.
Kyl said, “I believe her background as a prosecutor, crime-victims advocate, and years of public service make her an outstanding choice to become the next U.S. Attorney for Arizona. I congratulate her and join with Sen. McCain in urging for her swift confirmation.”
