Mesa will kick off the first Building Strong Neighborhoods initiative of 2012 on Tuesday, focusing on the Desert Sands 1, 2 and 3 neighborhoods. The program will begin with a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the East Mesa Moose Lodge, 7402 E. Baseline Road.

At the meeting, residents will hear the results of a survey conducted in the neighborhood to collect information about area needs. Action teams will be formed to address public safety, code enforcement and neighborhood issues. Residents who attend the meeting can meet city employees from police, housing, water, animal control and other departments.

The meeting will include representatives from the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, AAA Arizona, East Mesa YMCA and Community Bridges.

Mesa's Building Strong Neighborhoods Initiative was introduced in 2006 to improve one neighborhood in each City Council District per year. This project is in District 6, represented by Councilman Scott Somers. For more information, call (480) 644-5432.

For those of us working 2nd/3rd shift, this meeting might as well be on the moon. Why are most, if not all, meetings done at the most inopertune times? Would a saturday be asking too much?
