The heat is on in central Arizona and a fire watch is out for Mohave County.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning until 8 p.m. Monday evening for the greater Phoenix area including Buckeye, New River, Wickenburg, Mesa, Gila Bend, Apache Junction and Florence.

Very hot temperatures are predicted ranging from 109 to 112 degrees during the afternoon hours.

Forecasters suggest completing any necessary outdoor activity in the early morning when the sun and heat are less intense.

Also, pets should be kept indoors or in well-shaded areas with lots of water.

Meanwhile, a fire watch is in effect Tuesday in northwestern Arizona.

Strong winds combined with dry conditions will develop late Tuesday morning and continue through Tuesday evening across much of the area.
