Fountain Hills Councilman Jay Schlum is running for mayor. Schlum, 42, is approaching the end of his first term on the council. He was elected in 2004.
Schlum is in Dallas on business and did not immediately return a phone message left this morning. But on Saturday, the councilman told the Tribune in a voicemail that he intended to seek the mayoral post.
The town will have a vacancy in its top elected position because its current mayor, Wally Nichols, is not running for a fourth term. Nichols made the announcement following a council meeting last Thursday night.
Schlum is married with a 14-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son.
