A man driving the wrong direction on Interstate 10 was arrested Friday morning after his black 2005 Chevrolet Corvette collided with a truck, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
DPS spokesman Sgt. Harold Sanders said the Corvette traveled the wrong direction from Loop 202 at Priest Drive all the way to Ineterstate 10 near 16th Street before colliding head-on with a Nissan pick-up truck at 2:09 a.m.
The pickup driver, 37-year-old Jason Emerson of Tempe, said officers at the scene told him 99 percent of wrong way collisions are fatal. Emerson said he slowed down and swerved several times trying to avoid the Corvette. Emerson said both vehicles were destroyed by the impact.
Neither driver was seriously injured, Sanders wrote in an e-mail. He said the Corvette's driver, Gary Jason Mittendorf, 33, was arrested at the scene. But Sanders said he did not know if the Corvette driver was impaired or what charges he might face.
