A woman who was struck by a car while crossing a Mesa intersection against a red light Monday morning died from her injuries after the force of the vehicle catapulted her into a light pole in the median of the roadway.

Police say the woman, 56, failed to yield while running across the crosswalk in the 6800 block of Southern Avenue at Power Road about 6:30 a.m.. She was believed to be in a hurry to catch a Valley Metro bus, according to police.

The woman, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was later pronounced dead at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn hospital, police said.

Speed or impairment do not appear to be factors in the incident and the driver’s vision may have been affected by the sun, police said.
