A Gilbert woman will appear on the "Today Show" July 18 in a segment about long-distance friendships and traveling journals. Morgenne Basye is a member of a decade-long tradition among a group of five friends. Basye and four others started a traveling journal in 2001 as a way to stay connected after the Iowa friends ended up living in five different states. In June, the friends' journal was featured in The Wall Street Journal along with several photos from the last time they were all together.
The five women flew to New York for the taping just as the 10-year anniversary of the death of their close friend, Jessica, approached. They started circulating the traveling journal just before Jessica's death, filling it with photos, notes and poems. It has traveled more than 38,000 miles between the friends and has never been lost in the mail, according to a news release.
Last year, the women launched TheTravelingJournal.com with hopes of inspiring other groups of long distance friends to start similar journal journeys.
