The self-proclaimed prophet of a polygamous religious sect who was listed on the FBI’s most-wanted list since May on sexual misconduct charges was arrested in Nevada late Monday during a routine traffic stop.
Warren Steed Jeffs, 50, was arrested after highway patrolmen pulled over a 2007 Cadillac Escalade for not having a visible license plate.
Authorities questioned Jeffs, who was riding in the vehicle with his brother and wife. But their stories didn’t match, and police became suspicious.
More than $50,000 in cash was found in the SUV, along with wigs, a police scanner, a global positioning system, cell phones and laptop computers.
Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard called the arrest “a new era” in the Colorado City story, but former members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints said they doubt it will make any visible difference.
