The Picnic Company restaurant in downtown Mesa has closed because of nonpayment of rent, according to a sign on the front of the building at 142 W. Main St.
A Picnic Company employee, who declined to be identified, said the slow economy and an inability to work out new rental terms with the landlord forced the closing on Tuesday. The employee said the Picnic Company still hopes to negotiate new terms with the landlord, Tibshraeny Trust, which would allow the restaurant to reopen.
Thomas Axelsen, attorney for the Tibshraeny Trust, said the restaurant would have to pay back rent that is owed before it could reopen. He said the trust does not have a replacement tenant lined up.
