Thousands of motorcycles are vroom-vrooming around town this week for a good reason. Around 30,000 bikers are expected to take part in the 10th Arizona Bike Week, which ends Sunday.

A number of events, including charity rides, are scheduled, ending with a poker ride at 2 p.m. Sunday at Cyclefest in WestWorld of Scottsdale.

Take a spin past the Billet Bar at First Street and Scottsdale Road and you’re likely to see hundreds of bikers hanging out, chowing down and just having a good time in the sun.

“Phoenix has become one of the top rides in the country,” said Mike Kulka of Wilkes Barre, Pa., who participates in similar events around the country. “It’s a great place to meet other good people and, in cases like this one, to get involved in charity rides for good causes.”

Kulka said many people don’t realize how important children and cancer victims are to most bikers.

Bikers Tony and Jennifer Rasmussen own Against the Wind, a leather shop next to the Billet Bar. They call this week “like Christmas” for them and other area merchants.

“The weather and the opportunity to have some time to ride to places like the Grand Canyon, Sedona and Payson when there aren’t any races going on are attractive to the riders,” Tony Rasmussen said.
