Voters in the Higley Unified School District approved expanding the governing board from three to five members in a special election Tuesday.
“It just makes good sense to expand the board,” said board member Edwin Moore. “The board is dysfunctional with only three members and nobody can meet without violating open meeting laws.”
Higley voters will decide in November on the new board members. Before then, they will vote in September whether to recall board president Todd Nuttall and board secretary Peggy Zornes. If Zornes and Nuttall are recalled in September, their replacements also will be determined in November.
Nuttall said he favored increasing the board and was happy to see that it passed.
“It just makes it easier and a lot of the false accusations will go away about open meeting laws,” he said.
