The Arizona Department of Transportation said it is moving ahead with plans to place an eight-lane, $1.9 billion extension of the Loop 202 freeway through neighborhoods in Ahwatukee and parts of South Mountain Park.
Meanwhile, state freeway planners continue to meet with members of the Gila River Indian Community about running the freeway through tribal land instead of tearing up neighborhoods and defacing South Mountain Park.
ADOT spokesman Tim Tait told the South Mountain Citizens Advisory Team Monday that the state is still moving ahead with planning for an Ahwatukee freeway.
Tait told business groups and homeowner associations that the Gila tribe is still formally opposed to the freeway and ADOT has no plans to stop and wait for a decision from the tribe.
