Every year more than 100 veterans and residents of Friendship Village Tempe gather to observe Veterans Day with an honorary ceremony. This year, they will add something new to the occasion: the collection of hundreds of pairs of blue jeans to help the growing number of local veterans who are homeless.

Lyla White and fellow residents have organized the blue jeans drive at the senior living community. Until Friday, Nov. 11, individuals are encouraged to drop off new or gently used jeans at Friendship Village, 2645 E. Southern Ave.

Following Friday's Veterans Day Ceremony, a representative will deliver the jeans to Arizona StandDown, an organization that provides assistance to homeless veterans in Phoenix.
